Nokia N97, this just in…you Suck! - September 29, 2009

Nokia N97 and iPhone 3GSSorry it does.

I love Nokia phones, and considering our lack of money to roll around in at night, we decided to go with one new Iphone rather than shell out for two…the idea being that Gabriella and I would share both phones based on our needs. The Nokia when we needed a better camera and to stream video and the Iphone for anything else(basically). Well having played with it for a week I have to say AAAAARGGGGGGH!!!! So what’s wrong? Well here’s a short list:

  • Number one issue and the most annoying: Lack of memory! You are constantly having to close programs to open others. It’s non stop! 80mb have been dedicated to the phones memory with 32gb to the extra storage!!! WTF, why can’t I voluntarily dedicate 4, 5, 10 of those GB’s to the phones memory to solve these issues. I have deleted almost every app there is to get the memory issue down, but I still have the issue of too many apps open, sometimes with only the home page active. On top of this it appears one of the only ways to reset the memory is to turn off and back on the whole phone. VERY ANNOYING
  • Cut and paste: More than once I’ve copied or cut some text to then not be able to paste it into the place I need it. Why have the option at all
  • OVI store: This makes me laugh. The “app store” for Nokia is called Ovi. It comes with it’s own app: Ovi Store. It doesn’t work on my phone. It also can’t be uninstalled, and I can’t download a new version from their store. So right now I have a useless app eating up my precious memory, and no way to fix it. Plus I can’t use their “app store” to add anything else to the phone.
  • Nokia Ovi Suite: Desktop solution for interacting with the phone. First off does not have a mac version. Second off, does not work on my computer. Downloaded it three times, and can’t get it to run, without stalling.
  • Touch pad: Clunky and ineffective. Sometimes the touchpad is sensitive, sometimes it’s not…you never know when it will be or not, and therefore you are stuck not knowing what to expect on each app.
  • SLOW: Why does it take a half a minute to delete an email? And not let me browse my other emails while it’s deleting…I have a fear to press delete on my emails knowing I have a wait ahead before I can start interacting with the phone again.
  • WLAN vs 3G vs Whatever: why do you mr.N97 keep asking me how I want to connect, and when? If I have a wifi connection, KEEP ME FRIGGING CONNECTED TO IT, if I don’t, CONNECT WITH MY PHONES NETWORK. Simple. Don’t ask me at every task(within seconds of having connected for another task) if I want to connect again, why can’t I hit the default: I WANT TO BE CONNECTED AT ALL TIMES KEY? So annoying. I’d love one menu: Stay connected, Do not connect, or if you are loving the abuse Ask me to connect.

Bright point? The camera rocks! Seriously the camera is friggin amazing. I say this now after a month without my new Macbook Pro due to mess of hardware and software issues.  Thus according to my recent experiences  I personally think Nokia should give up on phones and go into cameras, and Apple should give up computers and go into phones. Maybe a bit dramatic, but if you had the month I’ve had with technology, you’d agree.

Dead computer…and mild moods - September 27, 2009

New Mac was nice, loved it for a month. Then it broke. New hard drive later and life was better for 12 hrs. Now it’s broke again. Monday I will drop it off to be looked at for a full diagnostic and repair. Let’s hope they can fix it, or better yet, give me a new one. I thought Macs were supposed to “just work”. Guess not. Should I move back to a PC, or maybe over to Linux? Who knows…I like the machine.

Hence this has set me back. Hard to get focused when you don’t know which machine your going to be using from day to day. You need to know your machine. You need to have a place to mark the wall, leave a sign that you were there. Without that, it’s hard to work. Rather, it’s hard to communicate. You need a home.

Life is all over, new phone, broken computer, visitors, stuff and travel.

I need stable, if just a for a little bit.

Then again, I do live in Spain.

Rotten Apple and other tech nightmares…this is not my week - September 9, 2009

rotten applethis is not my week. in order of the issues as they have arrived:

  • New macbook pro shuts down one last time and won’t come back on
  • Looking for the backup reinstall disks we realize they were lost somewhere on our USA tour
  • Apple care while helpful can only do their best to get me the disks quickly, by mail
  • My old computer is deciding to shut down randomly making for working uninterrupted very difficult
  • still have a crap cell phone since Movistar unlike the rest of the work, can’t work out distribution or effective ways of dealing with business clients.
  • Big project which was announced to the world, was canceled due to the client not realizing that we are in the 21st century
  • new client wants to upgrade their site by making it more 1.0, instead of the preferred 2.0
  • Other client mentions out of date and ineffective software needs to be maintained, though the original quote was for a moving to up to date and effective software to solve the problem

that said, some good things have happened too. I’m speaking more spanish. I think I’m ready for an exciting trip to London, and I think some hoppy beer is in route to my doorstep.

we’ll see what happens…stay tuned.
